This year we built a new raised bed in my garden specifically for herbs. And I can tell that they really love their new place! To my surprise they are all still going strong after our long and hot summer. That never happened before. It shows that regular watering and the right location is important.
Here is a list of the herbs I planted there:
- Thyme
- Lemon thyme
- Lavender
- Basil
- Oregano
- Marjoram
- Sage
- Tarragon
The abundance of herbs in my garden gave me an idea to try to make an herb wreath. At the end of last year during the heavy pruning of my grapes, I made small wreath bases/frames. I saved some cuttings to grow more grape plants and then used the youngest stems for bases. They were flexible enough to be shaped into round frames.
Just recently I was pruning a pussy willow tree in my backyard and decided to make some wreath frames from its cuttings. It worked well. I made them big and small. Excited to use them later on this year.
If you don’t have a frame on hand, you can always purchase it in arts and crafts store.
I really enjoyed the process of creating these beautiful and full of fragrance wreaths. I am sharing a step-by-step tutorial for you to use it when you decide to make some for yourself. With Christmas coming upon us, you can create evergreen wreaths using this same steps.
I took pictures of the process when I made small wreaths using rosemary. You can see the process of my herb wreath in a quick video at the end of this post.

To make your own herb wreath you will need:
- wreath base/frame
- fresh herbs
- florist wire or a yarn
- scissors

If you are making a bigger wreath, I would suggest you divide herbs into small bunches, tying them with rubber bands. It will be easier to work that way. Since my wreath was not that big, I did not tie them with rubber bands. I did not have florist wire, so I used simple craft yarn I found in my craft closet. It worked perfect!
Attach the small bunches of herbs to the base with wire or yarn. Wrap the wire or yarn around the base and make a knot to secure it by twisting it.

Overlap the bunches as you go. It is important that you do that. They will hide the rubber band or yarn you use.
After arranging all of the herbs on the front side of your wreath, flip it over. Remove excess stems, wire or yarn from the back.

Based on how you want to use it, you decide if you need a loop in the back or not. For a bigger wreath I would suggest you make one. For the loop you can use the same wire or yarn. I did not do anything. I used a ribbon to hang it in my kitchen window for the first few days. As it started to dry, I laid it flat to dry nicely. Now I use it as a candle wreath.

In my wreath I used:
- Sage
- Thyme
- Lavender
- Oregano (including its flowers)
- Marjoram (including its flowers)
- Tarragon (including its flowers)
- Dry flower heads of Israel sage
- Yarrow

It is a very relaxing craft. You will be happy you did it 🙂
You can let your creativity soar and make wreaths in different styles.

Here is the promised video 🙂 enjoy!
